A Fuel Surcharge can be a valuable defensive tool if used properly. In April I shared insights on the topic at the 2022 i-SIGMA Conference & Expo in Las Vegas, NV alongside Bob Johnson, CSDS, founder and CEO of the International Secure Information Governance & Management Association (i-SIGMA) in the session “How to Make Sure Your Upcoming Price Increase Succeeds.”This sensitive subject continues to be of peak interest to service providers due to the current state of the economy. As a follow-up, the event’s host association requested that I write an article on the subject to further share my insights with the industry. The resulting article, “Why it’s Time to Rethink Fuel Surcharges,” was published as the cover story for the June edition of i-SIGMA’s quarterly industry publication, the iG Journal.
In the article, I challenge providers to consider Fuel Surcharges as a form of “profit insurance”. For example, if diesel prices spike unexpectedly a well-designed Fuel Surcharge policy can protect from unexpected expenses eating away at the bottom line, without annoying clients by masking as a price increase.
